Gold OA
The journal makes all articles available free of charge.
Most gold OA journals charge an article processing charge (APC), shifting the payment from the reader to the author.
Green OA
The author has the right to archive pre- and post-prints in an online repository.
The author publishes their work in a closed-access journal while reserving the right to distribute their work in an open manner (free of charge), on their own website, a website controlled by the research institution that provided funding of the work, or to an independent open repository.
Hybrid OA
The journal offers an OA option to authors in exchange for an APC.
There is criticism of journals offering a hybrid OA model, as they may be being paid both by the author in the form of an APC and by libraries in the form of a subscription fee.
Bronze OA
The publisher chooses to make a publication free to access on their website. The terms and use and reuse are not clearly stated since there is no license (from Creative Commons, for example).
Diamond/Platinum OA
This is gold OA in which the author does not have to pay an APC.
The publisher may receive funding from sources such as advertisements, academic institutions, government grants, or philanthropists.
Black OA
Black OA infringes on the copyright of articles by offering them for free without the permission of the copyright holder. This model is piracy.
