Summary
Through this experience, I have gained a better understanding of copyright, Creative Commons licensing, Copyleft, and why open access research is so important to the academic community. These are things I have not considered much because I work in a public library. I was glad to be able to contribute to a resource that academics can benefit from.
I learned how to work collaboratively in a remote environment, and understand how to use Microsoft Teams now. I plan on introducing my workspace to Microsoft Teams and seeing if we can start to use it for our children’s programming. It is a good tool for collaboration and would save us from email chains and text messages getting lost.
I also got much better at using WorldCat, which I have only used to fill out ILL forms for my library system. I learned how to find chapters in books through WorldCat, and how to sift through the multiple editions to find the best match for the data entry. I feel more comfortable with this resource now.
Overall, this was a great learning experience. Lena is a good, motivational supervisor and her flexibility was critical to getting this practicum accomplished in the time of COVID-19. I greatly appreciated her cross-platform availability and her knowledge about not just what we were doing, but why it was important. I feel like my knowledge about the principles of open access is much better than before, and something to try to incorporate more into the public library world as I continue in my career.
I wish your notes included some address to the questions, what were the answers? I found the activity log of interest. Good questions, nice detail.
Thanks! I’ve updated the log with a short summary of the answers. A couple were reassigned and I was able to resolve the other two with Lena’s guidance.
Thank you. That was interesting and informative.
