Johanna Shultis – Activity Log

2020 | By Johanna Shultis | Filed in: Activity Logs.

July 27 — Met with Lena to discuss practicum learning plan and discuss practicum tasks, workflow, and obligations (30 minutes)

August 24 — Met with Lena to get set up with all of the necessary platforms and go over my first tasks (20 minutes)

August 24 — Reviewed orientation materials, created this activity log, created a BePress profile, filled out my WordPress profile, and introduced myself in Teams. I also downloaded the Chrome extension (1 hour)

August 25 — Added my blog link to my Bepress profile (30 minutes)

August 27 — Watched work flow videos and familiarized myself with the tools and process (1 hour 10 minutes)

August 27 — Met with Lena to check in and review work flow for taking professors from F to B (20 minutes)

Week 1: 3 hours 50 minutes

To date: 3 hours 50 minutes

August 31 — Worked on reviewing UMSL profiles (1 hour)

August 31 — Met with Lena and Rob for training on importing works into IRL (1 hour) and worked on importing (3 hours).

I ran into quite a few instances where an author’s work was uploaded under a different name (usually the first author listed on the article) and I wasn’t sure exactly what to do. I did not revise these to add a department, but I did add them in the import count on the faculty sheet. I made note (in my personal notes) of which authors and how many articles this happened with as well as the author listed on the import so I can come back to them if needed. I am also wondering what to do if a professor’s department is not listed (Anne Fish – Nursing).

September 2 — Imported works into IRL and installed fixed Chrome extension (1 hour)

September 2 — Met with Lena to go over questions and look at updated workflow (30 minutes)

Solutions: Go ahead and add department of the author I imported from, even if they aren’t the author listed on import (as long as they are listed in the metadata). Let Lena know about missing departments so she can add them.

Week 2: 6 hours 30 minutes

To date: 10 hours 20 minutes

September 5 — Revised previous imports to add department; got Rolla professors from F to B; imported UMSL works to IRL (4 hours)

I was unable to revise one previous import (“Effect of Case Management…” by Anne Fish) to add the department because of an error that said there were “invalid characters” in the abstract.

September 10 — Met with Lena (15 minutes)

September 12 — Worked on taking Rolla professors from F-C (2 hours)

Week 3: 6 hours 15 minutes

To date: 16 hours 35 minutes

September 14 — Took Rolla professors from C-B (2 hours)

September 14 — Met with Lena to check in and got the okay to keep going with Rolla professors (5 minutes)

September 14 — Took Rolla professors from C-B (1 hour)

September 15 — Took Rolla professors from C-B (1 hour 30 minutes)

September 16 — Worked on getting professors to an A and spent some time troubleshooting conditional formatting — it wasn’t working and then came back all of a sudden (and repeated a few more times…) (1 hour 30 minutes)

I was unable to find the PDF for one of Amy Belfi’s articles. Following the DOI link, I’m not sure if I am just not seeing where the PDF is available or if it simply isn’t. I could not find it via the library.

I also could not find a PDF for a few of Jie Gao’s articles. I’m asked to pay for access via the DOI link and they were not available through the library.

I emailed Lena a list of the above titles.

September 17 — Met with Lena and talked about problems finding PDFs, the importance of citation, and Zotero. Discovered that the issue with the Amy Belfi PDF is that it is an open access abstract (30 minutes)

Week 4: 6 hours 35 minutes

To date: 23 hours 10 minutes

September 21 — Downloaded Zotero and established a citation-harvesting database for myself (1 hour) and worked on getting Rolla professors to A (3 hours)

I could not find one publisher PDF for Elizabeth Cudney (https://doi.org/10.1080/10429247.2013.11431994, A Comparative Analysis of Defensive Routines and Theories-In-Use of Engineering and Non-Engineering Managers). The DOI in the spreadsheet led to a 404 error. I followed the link on their BePress and hit a paywall and could not find the title at all via the library.

I also could not find two for Daniel Fischer (https://doi.org/10.1063/1.4914040, Electron and recoil ion momentum imaging with a magneto-optically trapped target) (https://doi.org/10.1063/1.4894253, Polar state in freestanding strontium titanate nanoparticles). I could only find the preprints, and I’m wondering if this is another “open access abstract” scenario.

September 21 — Met with Lena (1 hour)

Solutions: Lena helped find the elusive PDFs and I added them to the professor profiles.

September 22 — Worked on getting Rolla professors from C to B (2 hours)

September 24 — Worked on getting Rolla professors Ulrich Jentschura, Benjamin Kwasa, Jennifer Leopold, Douglas Ludlow, and Carlos Castano Giraldo from C to B (2 hours)

September 24 — Met with Lena and she suggested including professor names in my activity log updates, so those will be included from now on. She also followed up about the “open access abstract” situation from earlier and learned that they are using the “Unpaywall” tool to access. Got the okay to keep going with Rolla professors (10 minutes)

Week 5: 9 hours 10 minutes

To date: 32 hours 20 minutes

September 28 — Got Rolla professors Petra Dewitt and Daryl Beetner to B and then worked on getting professors Julie Semon through Richard Brow to C. Ran into some technical difficulties with the UM Discovery System loading slowly or repeatedly failing to load. I also had to redownload the Chrome extension because it stopped working. I got a “your file could not be found” error when I clicked on it. Redownloading seemed to fix the issue (2 hours 30 minutes)

September 29 — Got Rolla professors Rui Bo through Jiangfan Zhang to B (1 hour)

September 30 — Worked on getting Rolla professor Martin Bohner to B; did not complete (30 minutes)

September 30 — Met with Lena (30 minutes)

Week 6: 4 hours 30 minutes

To date: 36 hours 50 minutes

October 5 — Finished Martin Bohner and continued getting Rolla professors to B (through David Enke, who I did not complete) (4 hours)

A couple of notes: For Abhijit Gosavi, there are two entries in the discovery works sheet with the same title, “Attitudes toward face-to-face meetings in virtual engineering teams: perceptions from a survey of defense projects.” There are also two entries of this title on Bepress, one link and one download. I matched one DOI (10.1504/IJPOM.2017.085284) to the link entry on Bepress but could not find a DOI on the download to match it to the discovery works sheet. Both DOIs (second one being 10.1504/IJPOM.2017.10006010) on the discovery works actually lead to the same web address which is the same linked on Bepress. I included the download version on Bepress as the second entry in the discovery works sheet to have it, but just wanted to run this past Lena because it was a bit odd!

For Elvan Akin, the work with DOI 10.4064/ba58-3-5 has a different title on Bepress vs. the discovery works sheet (“Practical stability in terms of two measures for hybrid systems on time scales” vs. “Practical stability in terms of two measures for hybrid dynamic systems”). The DOIs do match, so I included the Bepress entry on the discovery works sheet with a note about the title. I’m just wanting to confirm that this is okay.

October 5 — Met with Lena (10 minutes)

Solutions: Nothing to resolve with Gosavi, just a strange thing! I will make a note next to the download entry in discovery works sheet. Akin is okay.

October 5 — Completed getting David Enke to B, worked on Alexey Yamilov (did not complete) (1 hour 30 minutes)

October 6 — Finished getting Alexey Yamilov to B, worked on getting Rolla professors Simon Lekakh through Ulrich Jentschura to A (1 hour)

October 7 — Got Rolla professors Benjamin Kwasa through Martin Bohner to A (1 hour 30 minutes)

I could not find a publisher pdf for Martin Bohner’s articles:

  1. “Asymptotic behavior of solutions of forced third-order dynamic equations” (DOI 10.1515/anly-2018-0003)
  2. “Existence of at Least One Homoclinic Solution for a Nonlinear Second-Order Difference Equation (DOI 10.1515/ijnsns-2018-0223)
  3. “Optimal harvesting policy for the Beverton–Holt model” (DOI 10.3934/mbe.2016014)
  4. “Abel dynamic equations of first and second kind” (DOI 10.1515/GMJ-2015-0026)
  5. “Delay difference equations: Coexistence of oscillatory and nonoscillatory solutions” (DOI 10.1524/anly.2013.1226)

Week 7: 8 hours 10 minutes

To date: 45 hours

HALFWAY POINT

October 12 — Meeting with Lena (25 minutes)

Lena found the PDF for article #3 and I will do ILL for the rest.

October 12 — Put in ILL requests for the Martin Bohner articles above, got Rolla professors Abhijit Gosavi through Alexy Yamilov to A and professors Anh-Thu Le through John Singler to B. (3 hours)

When I was looking for article #5 to put in an ILL request, I noticed that Mizzou linked to the Open Access version. I clicked this and it took me to a PDF of only the first page. Lena and I came across this as well when we were looking for the article somewhere else before deciding to do ILL. I went ahead and requested in through ILL anyway. Just something curious I thought was worth noting!

I could not find the PDF for Alexy Yamilov’s article “An ultrasonic analog for a laser.” The DOI (10.1121/1.4786801) leads to an abstract and the article is unavailable through the library. Possibly an open access abstract?

October 13 — Got Rolla professors David Riggins through Julie Semon to B (1 hour)

October 13 — Received Martin Bohner articles #4 and #1 via ILL and uploaded them to his folder. These additions are now reflected on his discovery works sheet and the big list (20 minutes)

October 13 — Met with Lena and decided to do ILL for the Yamilov article as well after only being able to locate the preprint (25 minutes)

October 15 — Received Martin Bohner article #5 via ILL and uploaded it to his folder; reflected in discovery works sheet and on the big list. Requested the Yamilov article through ILL. Got Rolla professor Prakash Reddy to B (1 hour 30 minutes)

Week 8: 6 hours 40 minutes

To date: 51 hours 40 minutes

October 19 — Got Rolla professors Anh-Thu Le through Prakash Reddy to A. (I found that for one of Le’s articles, I had to register for a free membership to AAAS in order to view the PDF. Not an issue and it was free, just something interesting that I hadn’t run into before!) Got Rolla professor Abdulmohsin Imqam to B. Posted a job listing and a blurb relating my practicum experience to its qualifications in the “Get a Job” forum in Teams. (3 hours)

I could not find a publisher PDF for John Singler’s articles:

  1. “Balanced truncation model reduction of a nonlinear cable-mass PDE system with interior damping” (DOI 10.3934/dcdsb.2018162). When I try to access via the DOI, there’s an error page so it may be an issue with the journal.

October 19 — Met with Lena; I will do an ILL request for the Singler article (30 minutes)

Week 9: 3 hours 30 minutes

To date: 55 hours 10 minutes

October 26 — Received Bohner article #2 via ILL and Yamilov article via ILL. I uploaded the Bohner article to his professor folder and the addition is reflected in the big list. (The Yamilov article is only one page and I’m not exactly sure what it is. I’m emailing it to Lena in anticipation of our meeting later today.) Requested the Singler article via ILL. Took Rolla professors Yue-Wern Huang through Zeyi Sun to B (4 hours)

Questions I am writing down because I keep forgetting to ask:

If all of the works on the OA checked sheet are OA, why are some behind paywalls? Is the purpose of the Discovery Works sheet to get consistency between the University profile and the Bepress profile?

October 26 — Met with Lena; decided to just skip the Yamilov article (30 minutes)

October 27 — Took Rolla professors Taghi Sherizadeh through Richard Brow to B (2 hours 30 minutes)

October 28 — Got Rolla professors Abdulmohsin Imqam through Donald Wunsch to A (30 minutes)

Week 10: 7 hours 30 minutes

To date: 62 hours 40 minutes

November 2 — Got Rolla professors David Westenberg through Richard Brow to A (1 hour)

November 2 — Chatted with Lena and got the okay to keep going

November 2 — Got Rolla professors Mehdi Ferdowsi through Michael Meagher to C, and then Ferdowsi to B (2 hours)

November 4 — Got Rolla professors Jonathon Obrist Farner and Francisca Oboh Ikuenobe to B (30 minutes)

Week 11: 3 hours 30 minutes

To date: 66 hours 10 minutes

November 9 — Got Rolla professors Sanjay Kumar Madria through Sahra Sedigh to B (1 hour 30 minutes)

Lots of “Missing” in this group!

November 9 — Met with Lena (10 minutes)

November 10 — Got Rolla professors Audra Merfeld Langston and A.R. Hurson to B (30 minutes)

November 11 — Got Rolla professor Manashi Nath to B (45 minutes)

November 14 — Got Rolla professors Chen Hou through Samuel Frimpong to B (1 hour)

Week 12: 3 hour 55 minutes

To date: 70 hours 5 minutes

November 16 — Got Rolla professors Patrick Gamez through Steven Corns to B. Got halfway through Honglan Shi (2 hours)

November 16 — chatted with Lena

November 17 — Finished getting Honglan Shi to B; got Rolla professors Bonnie Bachman through Amber Henslee to B (1 hour)

November 18 — Got Rolla professors Daniel Stutts and Nan Jiang to B (30 minutes)

November 21 — Got Rolla professors Mehdi Ferdowsi through Yanzhi Zhang to A and Michael Meagher to B (2 hours)

I could not find Samuel Frimpong’s article below:

  • A stochastic simulation framework for truck and shovel selection and sizing in open pit mines, DOI 10.17159/2411-9717/2015/V115N3A6

The DOI link is broken and accessing through the Mizzou Library comes up with a “bad request” 400 error.

I also could not find Mahelet Fikru’s article:

  • Environmental Performance of Food and Beverage Firms in Merger and Acquisition Deals, DOI 10.1515/JAFIO-2017-0037

Or Yanzhi Zhang’s article:

  • A comparative study on nonlocal diffusion operators related to the fractional Laplacian, DOI 10.3934/DCDSB.2018110

Week 13: 5 hours 30 minutes

To date: 75 hours 35 minutes

November 23 — Took Rolla professors Nobuyuki Fukawa through Nan Jiang to A (30 minutes)

I could not find Nan Jiang’s articles:

  1. Analysis of Model Variance for Ensemble Based Turbulence Modeling, DOI 10.1515/CMAM-2014-0029
  2. Analysis of a Stabilized CNLF Method with Fast Slow Wave Splittings for Flow Problems, 10.1515/CMAM-2015-0010

Following the DOIs, I have to pay for access. They were not available via Mizzou’s library.

November 23 — Met with Lena and got Frimpong’s article and preprints for the Jiang and Zhang articles. I will do ILL to get publisher PDFs of the preprints as well as Fikru’s article (10 minutes)

November 24 — Submitted ILL requests for Jiang articles 1 and 2, the Zhang article, and the Fikru article. I added Frimpong’s article and the preprint for the Zhang article to their folders (labelling the preprint as such) and updated the big list to reflect these additions. I downloaded the preprints for the Zhang articles and realized that publisher pdf is the only version listed under “archiving locations allowed,” so I did not add them to the folder and I’m waiting for ILL. Got Michael Meagher to A (45 minutes)

November 24 — Received both Jiang articles and the Zhang article via ILL, uploaded them to their respective folders, and updated the big list to reflect the additions. Got Rolla professors Yinfa Ma through Amitava Choudhury from F-A. Got Xiaoming He from F-C and started working on getting them to B but did not complete (2 hours 15 minutes)

November 26 — Got Rolla professor Xiaoming He to A (1 hour)

I could not find He’s articles:

  1. “Preface,” DOI 10.3934/DCDSB.201901I. The DOI takes me to a paywall and I could not find a preface by He via Mizzou’s library that matched the journal and year. It’s much more difficult to search when the title is not specific!
  2. “Euler-Maclaurin expansions and approximations of hypersingular integrals,” DOI 10.3934/DCDSB.2015.20.1355. DOI takes me to a paywall and no access via Mizzou’s library

November 27 — Chatted with Lena and got the okay to keep going

November 27 — Got Rolla professors John McManus through Shun Saito to A (1 hour 30 minutes)

November 27 — Got Rolla professors Heng Pan and Stuart Baur to A and Julia Medvedeva to B (1 hour 45 minutes)

November 28 — Got Rolla professors Julia Medvedeva to A and Anthony Convertine to B (1 hour)

Week 14: 8 hours 55 minutes

To date: 84 hours 20 minutes

November 30 — Met with Lena. She grabbed article #2 (in folder and added to the count on the big list) and we are going to skip over article #1 because it’s just a preface (5 minutes)

As I approach the end of my 90 hours, I’ve been doing professors one by one and taking them from F-A in one go instead of doing a batch to C, then B, then A. I kind of like this workflow better. I’m finding I don’t get bored as easily because it isn’t so repetitive — especially compared to getting 10 professors in a row to B.

November 30 — Got Delbert Day through V. Sriram Siddhardh Nadendla to A and worked on getting Douglas Bristow to B (did not complete) (30 minutes)

December 1 — Got Rolla professor Douglas Bristow to A (30 minutes)

December 2 — Familiarized myself with the UMKC workflow, completed UMKC’s Oral Pathology, Medicine and Radiology department and started the Oral and Craniofacial Sciences department. I got as far as uploading the excel sheets for all professors (1 hour)

If no professor from a department is in the Discovery System, so there are no excel sheets, should I skip making the folder?

December 3 — Continued working on uploading publisher PDFs for UMKC’s Oral and Craniofacial Sciences department (45 minutes)

I could not find the article below:

McArthur, C., The α-test: Rapid Cell-free CD4 Enumeration Using Whole Saliva, DOI 10.3791/3999

December 6 — Continued working on uploading publisher PDFs for UMKC’s Oral and Craniofacial Sciences department. I completed professors through Mary P. Walker (1 hour 15 minutes)

I could not find the publisher PDF for UMKC professor Jeffrey Gorski’s article “Biomineralization of bone: a fresh view of the roles of non-collagenous proteins” (DOI 10.2741/3875). I was able to find an Open Access version via Mizzou’s library, but it says it is an author manuscript. Preprint and postprint are allowed, but I wasn’t sure if an author manuscript is either of those.

Week 15: 4 hour 5 minutes

To date: 88 hours 25 minutes

December 7 — Met with Lena. She found the Gorski article and I will do ILL for the McArthur article. To answer my question about the Gorski author manuscript: it could be either a preprint or a postprint, depending on whether or not it was peer reviewed (10 minutes)

December 7 — Requested the McArthur article via ILL. Received the Fikru and Singler articles from a couple weeks ago via ILL. I added them to their respective folders and attempted to update the big list to reflect this, but I’m having trouble viewing the full sheet. I will update if I can solve this! (15 minutes)

December 8 — The issue with the big list is that there was a filter on it from when Kymmi was working — I didn’t know you could do that! I cleared the filter and updated the OA counts for Fikru and Singler. Completed UMKC’s Oral and Craniofacial Sciences department (1 hour 50 minutes)

I could not find Stefan Lohfield’s article:

Oxidation behaviour of particle reinforced MoSi 2 composites at temperatures up to 1700°C, DOI 10.1002/maco.200403833

Based on other articles of Lohfield’s, this should be a “part” — there is Part I and Part II on their sheet which I found. I’m not sure if that’s why I can’t find it.

I also could not find Yong Wang’s article:

Scanning acoustic microscopy studies of cortical and trabecular bone in the femur and mandible, DOI 10.1121/1.4788266

The DOI takes you to an abstract that shows Open Access, but no article or PDF download option.

Week 16: 2 hours 15 minutes

To date: 90 hours 40 minutes

December 14 — Received the McArthur article via ILL and added to folder (5 minutes)

Week 17: 5 minutes

To date: 90 hours 45 minutes
