1/13/2022Articles added yesterday were not visible to me because it takes 24 hours for profiles to update. Today I updated profiles for Elain Doherty, Janet Lauritsen, and Kelsey Cundiff, moving them all to a B. 180
1/14/2022I edited all of the links I had added to Beth Huebner so that they are the doi links. I then got all the other criminology professors previously at a C to a B. There are several professors who are not on the UM Discovery site. Will they remain at an F+, or is there a way to get them onto the Discovery site?120
1/18/2022– Lena addressed my above question, stating that the discovery system only includes those professors who are tenured or on tenure track. For those who are not on the discovery system, the highest they can get is an F+. It is possible to get those with Fs to F+ by creating profiles for them.
– Lena and I also discussed a data remediation project for a photo collection. I spent an hour editing dates in the file she gave me. I changed items that read, for example, 23 to 2003, 24 to 2004, etc. I am unsure how to edit dates that read 197, 198, or 2. I assume they would edit to 1970, 1980, 2000.
– I created a department folder for the political science department and began downloading files from the discovery site.
180
1/19/2022– I completed downloading files to the political science department.
– Lena and I met with Jessica from Bepress. Jessica showed me around Selected Works and Digital Commons. One thing to note about this training was that I learned that there is an import feature in Selected Works that allows the import of works from one profile to another. This will be helpful when a work has contributions from multiple UMSL professors.

1/20/2022– Added article to political science professors’ profiles. I came across a doi link that was broken. Does this happen often?
– Spent time reading up on Sherpa Romeo.
120
1/21/2022– I played around with the find feature in Excel to make metadata remediation more streamlined.
– I worked more on political science profiles. Are book reviews, book chapters, and books added to profiles?
120
1/24/2022– Met with Lena. I will add books and book chapters to profiles but will not add book reviews.
– I looked into open access colors and wrote up a brief description of each.
– I worked a little more on metadata remediation.
120
1/25/2022– I sent the remediated metadata to Lena and will add missing metadata on black and white/color.
– The polisci. dept. is now up to B’s.
120
1/26/2022– Met with Lena. We went over the process of getting professors to an A. This involves looking at a professor’s OA checked works file, finding works that have a publisher pdf, then adding the pdf link to the work on their SW profile. In addition to adding the link, the display category must also be edited in order for the work to display as OA on the profile page. I was able to get Elaine (CCJ dept.) to an A.
– I posted information about open access models to the practicum blog.
120
2/1/2022– I worked more on metadata remediation. I could not add photo color metadata to images 5707-5712 because I could not locate any items after 5553 in the photo database. I also noticed and fixed more capitalization problems in the title field, including “‘s” and some abbreviations. 120
2/3/2022– I met with Lena today. I will be adding more departments to the Teams folder by finding what departments are not in IRL. I learned how to add a department file to Teams and documented the steps to do so on the blog.
120
2/7/2022– I got the polisci department up to an A.
– I tried to work on other departments, but I couldn’t access the discovery site due to an SSL certificate error.
90
2/10/2022– I met with Lena.
– I spent two hours reading up on the BePress harvesting tool and watching some webinars on BePress.
– I spent another hour trying to port the Chrome extension to Microsoft Edge. Unfortunately, I did not have luck with this.
180
2/14/2022– The discovery site was back up. I uploaded professor files using the Chrome extension. Physics & Astronomy is now at a B. The OA checked works sheets, however do not contain anything but titles and DOIs, so I could not proceed with adding pdf links to SW profiles.120
2/15/2022– I work with the sociology department, getting them to a B, but again the OA checked work sheets did not contain anything but titles and DOIs.60
2/16/2022– Lena determined that the extension was not working properly. This discovery led to a discussion about where the data that is gathered by the extension comes from. The titles and DOIs are gathered from the professor’s page on irl.umsl.edu. Everything else comes from shareyourpaper.com. The permissions on shareyourpaper changed. The resulting url changed broke the extension. Lena is hoping to get it back up and running today, but if it is not fixed tomorrow, I will get more departments up to a B.30
2/17/2022– I added the accounting department and got half of the professors to a B. One article for Michele M was locked and could not be viewed without a subscription to the publication.120
2/21/2022– I finished getting accounting to a B and got started on Social Work.
– I met with Lena. She has not been able to get the extension working but showed me how to use “the new checker” to get the information need into the OA checked works sheets. I updated the blog post about getting professors to an A to reflect use of “the new checker”. I also added a short explanation of ROR ID’s.

2/22/2022– Today I worked from UMSL’s Thomas Jefferson Library, where I spent some time scanning documents and creating metadata. I then posted and made available archival material in the institutional repository. I created, edited and compressed the pdf and revised the metadata in the ir. Lena and I discussed digital preservation and file size. We also talked a little about SPARC, which I will spend more time reading about.135
2/24/2022– I worked toward getting social work up to a B.150
2/25/2022– As I got social work up to a B, I noticed that nearly every social work professor had at least one work listed twice in the spreadsheet. One was listed with the complete doi url, the other with just the doi. This has been the only department I’ve noticed with duplications like that, and it was fairly consistent. 120
3/1/2022– A question arose in my scholarly communication class about UM’s lack of OA policy. Lena explained her reasoning behind not having an OA policy at UMSL. A policy might actually impede some faculty freedoms because there may be some types of research and scholarship that may be at odds with OA. This could include research funded by government grants, for profit books, and certain patents. I asked if these things could be addressed in the policy, and of course they could be. However, there are other things to consider when implementing an OA policy, such as who will enforce it?, who will update it?, what will be the cost of it?, will it affect the library budget?.

I did a little investigating OA policies at other universities. Southern Illinois University has a very brief policy which states that each faculty member must grant permission to SIU to make accepted, peer-reviewed manuscripts publicly available in the SIU IR before making a contractual arrangement with a publisher. *Question* How does this fit into to flow of publication? When are contractual arrangements made? After peer review, or before? The policy applies to all articles authored while the author is a faculty member, with the exception of articles for which the faculty member enters into and incompatible licensing agreement. Faculty members are responsible for submitting a form to waive the license for a particular article or to delay access to the article. If they do not submit a waiver, they must submit the post-peer-reviewed article to the repository within 30 days of publication. No fees are charged for depositing in the IR. https://www.siue.edu/lovejoy-library/pdf/OAPolicy1.pdf

Missouri State University, in August 2021, entered into an OA agreement with IEEE. MSU authors will be able to publish OP article in all IEEE journals. MSU Libraries cover article processing fees at a bulk discount. *Question* This seems rather uncommon. Have you heard of this type of agreement? Does this mean that faculty can publish with only IEEE journals?https://libnotes.missouristate.edu/2021/08/new-open-access-agreement-with-ieee/

3/8/2022I spent some time reading about IRs. I noted that most articles about IRs mention the reluctance of many researchers in depositing their work in their university’s IR. Many of the articles I found this in were from 2018 and 2019. Lena and have talked about faculty requirements to report on their research in myVita. I am curious as to how new and widespread compulsory reporting of research to a system like this is. 120
3/10/2022– I met with Lena today. We discussed the fact that a professor’s myVita reports do not constitute a deposit, per se, in the IR. Professors don’t necessarily even have the pdfs to deposit, let alone the time to deposit them.
– I turned in my midterm practicum report to Laura England, practicum coordinator.
30
3/16/2022I used the “new checker” to find OA works for Social Work. I was able to get most of the Social Work faculty to an A but need pdf’s for a few works. I did an ILL request for two of the needed pdf’s, but I could not find pdf’s for
10.18061/DSQ.V25I2.554 and
10.1037/a0016581.
210
3/27/2022– Sociology is now at an A.
– Social Work is at an A with the exception of two people, for whom I cannot find pdf’s.
– I got two Physics professors to an A and am waiting on an ILL request to get the last one up to an A.
180
3/30/2022– Physics is up to A.
– Accounting is up to A.
– I began working to get CCJ to an A. Can I use crimrxiv as the journal in SW? There was an article that I could only find there. It was also listed as being on https://victimresearch.org/, but there wasn’t a doi for that listing.
90
4/6/2022– CCJ in now at an A.
– I added the Economics department and got in up to an A.
360
4/13/2022– Met with Lena yesterday to discuss my progress. The answer to my question about using the crimrxiv is that I can use that as the journal if no other is available.
– I began working on the Finance Department.
210
4/14/2022– I got Finance to an A and began working on Global Leadership and Management.210
4/20/2022Global Leadership Management is at a B.180
4/21/2022– Global Leadership Management is at an A.
– I made files for and got to a D/F the departments of Information Systems & Technology and Marketing & Entrepreneurship.
180
4/27/2022– I got Info Systems & Tech and Marketing and Entrepreneurship an A.
– I met with Lena today. I asked if there was a data repository at UMSL. We discussed data sets, data management plans, and data repositories. We also talked about wrapping up practicum.
– I gathered data that indicates who many OA works I added and how many profiles those works were added to.
330
5/2/2022– I wrote a short summary of the practicum for use in my job search and updated my linkedIn profile.
– I submitted my site supervisor evaluation for the practicum.
