Practicum Conclusion Summary

I started my practicum in 2019 during the month of September.  I initially spent Saturdays at Lewis and Clark and Florissant Valley Library.  It was a very fun experience that allowed me the opportunity to assist patrons and develop some hands on experience about the organizational structure of libraries.  I started a new position a few months prior and was still in my probationary phase, so I only volunteered on Saturdays; not every Saturday.  I took a short hiatus between December and February and started back up again at the tail end of February 2020.  I was only able to get two dates in this year: One at FV and the other at LC, before COVID-19 hit.

At this point, like so many of my peers, I was not yet complete and did not know how or when I would be able to complete my practicum.  The libraries had shut down and for the time being webinars were being offered as a substitute.  While this was going on, I was still working on my Portfollio for another course I was taking and in the process of preparing for graduation.  I also had to make some adjustments to my work schedule. In the meantime, Laura England -Biggs and Dr. Adkins were working with UMSL to get a project set up for those who were in limbo about their practicums and even those who needed to start for the following semester.  So I ended up taking on this project, working with Lena Marvin, the Institutional Repository Librarian at UMSL.

Through a series of back and fourth emails and virtual meetings I learned about Open Access Works through BePress and Missouri Discovery Academy.  I was also shown how to check the content profile of a work though Open Access Checker.  I created a BePress and Wiki Page, documented how I did it and uploaded it.  I was also invited to join Teams; a shared collaborative work site and am currently writing my first blog for UMSL digital humanities. I am thankful for all that I have been able to learn through this short period of time.  Lena has been incredibly helpful.  I look forward to graduating, although there won’t be a formal celebration.  Just knowing that this chapter of my life is coming to a close is bittersweet.  Thanks for taking the time to read this.
