Summary

The most significant aspect of this practicum for me was acquiring a better understanding of the scholarly communication process and how that process interacts with and is influenced by different technologies and platforms over time. Using Google Scholar, Google Books, and WorldCat, I learned how professor bibliometrics and citation information is tracked, and the usefulness of technologies like ORCID.

I honed my research skills. With more knowledge of how and where to find articles, I was able to use several strategies to locate works that were difficult to find, such as out-of-print books or print-only journal articles, and became more successful and efficient in doing so. I can use this knowledge to teach others how to find information they need and provide better service and instruction to those looking for information. Knowing how to find a scholar’s works, whether it be a pre-print, post-print, a conference or symposium, I am more confident in my ability to find some version of a scholar’s work and to teach that skill. This experience has rounded-out my understanding of how different media, journals, and publishers handle information in different ways over time based on the technologies available and what that might mean for each discipline.
