May 11, 2020— I met with Lena again via Zoom to discuss getting started with the practicum (30 min.).
In the evening, I acclimated myself with the collaborative technologies we’ll be using for this project: Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and WordPress. I also had my first experience with BePress (so many Presses). I created my BePress account with bio and profile picture, and documented it in an Orientations draft (may delete later if unnecessary). I also documented the process of adding the link to your WordPress blog onto your BePress account, which is also saved as an Orientations draft (3.5 hours).
May 12, 2020— I met with Lena and Michelle on Zoom to discuss next steps. In the coming hours I will specifically focus on reviewing the post about moving from the discovery tool to the checker and checking BePress (30 min.).
May 13, 2020— I uploaded pictures of my supervisors (pets) to the Teams group (for morale). Read “Discovery on the Professor’s Works spreadsheet” post, tried to use Adriano Udani as an example but continue to get an error message when trying to load his page on the discovery site. Using Lav Gupta as an example instead. I have some questions about formatting, which I plan to clarify in my meeting with Lena tomorrow. I read the following blog post about using the checker and made a copy of the file to prepare for next steps (3 hours).
May 14, 2020— I met with Lena to talk about my problems with importing information into the spreadsheet and received clarification. We discussed my plan for work and meetings for the following week (40 min.).
May 18, 2020— Watched “Open Access Explained” video. Finished Anne Winkler’s profile. Marked Ann Taylor, Rachel Winograd as not in system. Mostly finished Chung Wong’s profile. Video called with Taylor to discuss issues, but need to follow up with Lena. (3 hours 40 min.)
Questions: How to get titles to show up together when filtered (could not do so for Chung Wong)? What to do if there are works on the BePress page that are not in the excel list (Anne Winkler)? Also- need to ask about multiple entries of the same work on the excel sheet (Anne Winkler).
May 20, 2020— Worked around title filtering issue but copy and pasting Chung Wong’s works into an Excel 365 worksheet and back into the Teams file. When I enter all of his works into the checker, it says none of them can be checked due to metadata error. NOTE: I get this error message and the filtering problems when I use a MacBook, but not when I use a Microsoft laptop? I’ll use the latter from now on. Was able to finish Wong’s profile (2 hours).
Questions: Worked with Shawn Woodhouse’s profile again, only one title could be checked? The other titles say “no” for “permission checked” but don’t give an explanation. Need to follow up on this.
May 22, 2020— Finished Yuefeng Wu, Dan Younger, and Jeanne Zarucchi. Had to switch back to Windows to fix Dan Younger. Started Gaiyan Zhang (2 hours).
Questions: If a work is downloadable on the selected works, but requires MU login, is it still considered a download or is it a link? Also, what if there are two versions of the same article on a profile, and you find a link on the bepress- does that mean that both get classified as “link?”— Need to verify that I have classified downloads correctly (according to the download button rather than exploring the journal page).
May 24, 2020— Again had problems filtering with Gaiyan Zhang, but finished after alternating between app and browser versions of teams. Discovery System stopped working (1 hour 15 min.).
May 25, 2020— Had Zoom call with Lena, emailed Discovery site to ask about inability to access professor profiles. Got a response asking for more info but the problem worked itself out in the meantime. Spoke with partner about creating automation for crosswalk process. Updated documentation about getting started with Permissions Checker. Need to ask Lena about duplicates on Selected Works– she mentioned needing to possibly address this through notes. Nothing I need to do at the moment. Continued work on more professors in the meantime (2 hours 45 min.).
May 27, 2020— Completed Zwarun’s profile. Went back to check on download/link notation from previously completed profiles, all profiles are correct now. Back to creating profiles (2 hours).
May 28, 2020— Explained process from start to finish to practicum programmer. Looked over his work so far on the Chrome extension. Gave him more information about how to proceed with Excel output (1 hour 30 min.).
May 29, 2020— Met with Lena to discuss progress with the Chrome extension (30 min.). Worked with programmer to make Chrome extension grab scholar ID from Discovery page when clicked (2 hours).
May 30, 2020— Worked with programmer to add articles, books, book chapters, conference proceedings to csv file generated by Chrome extension as types. Sorted publications by year (1 hour).
May 31, 2020— Coordinated with programmer to add second sheet to generated csv file to show Permission Checker’s output. This occurred after the Permission Checker’s seeming transition to using DOI to check permissions. Need to see if it is still possible to check by title without DOI (2 hours).
June 1, 2020— Met with Lena to discuss progress on Chrome extension. Attended BePress training. Updated programmer on further changes to Chrome extension (1 hour 30 min.).
June 2, 2020— Met with programmer to address requested changes for OA Checked Works sheet template (1 hour).
June 3, 2020— Updated Bruce Wilking excel sheet, was partially processed when reviewed. Checked in with programmer as he continued to make changes and worked on uploading as an extension to Chrome Web Store (15 min).
June 4, 2020— Drafted instructions, recorded video explaining how to download Chrome extension (1 hour). Met with Lena, watched her perform my instructions- everything was in full working order, and was handed to other students. Worked together on revising the workflow diagram (1 hour).
June 5, 2020— Met with Lena to discuss next steps for editing documentation for using the Chrome extension. Added screenshots and expanded notations. Shifted to bringing my professors graded “b” up to an “a.” Began with Bruce Wilking, who had no missing works and is now an a. Watched video about the process. Continued to work with profiles and encountered problems listed below (3 hours 45 min.). Met with Lena to discuss problems and creating further documentation (1 hour).
Problems: multiple listings of the same work in different formats (encountered when working with Shalai Williams)- add both? Also, how to edit pre-print work hosted on a different UMSL professor’s page that was added via harvesting (encountered when working with Anne Winkler).
June 6, 2020— Updated Anne Winkler’s profile according to what we discussed in the meeting. Still have issues for her- have a list of questions to ask on Monday 🙂 Started documentation on A+ OA process (1 hour 15 min.).
June 7, 2020— Coded Bruce Wilking, Shalai Williams, Dan Younger as A+… please check, did not find any publisher pdf works for either. Tried to bring Chung Wong to A+ but had difficulties locating publisher pdfs. Shawn Woodhouse- maybe A+, need to verify. Yuefeng Wu- A+ if okay to leave out conference proceeding (no doi). Dan Younger- need to ask. Have many more questions about various professors and steps, will address tomorrow (2 hours 25 min.).
June 8, 2020— Met with Lena to discuss problems and further A+ OA documentation. Worked on writing steps and met with Lena again to hand off the post (2 hours 45 min.).
June 9, 2020— Worked on practicum schedule for course’s Canvas submission. Asked question in Problems with Professors (authorship/other collaboration). Re-downloaded Anne Winkler’s works to focus only on works with doi- greatly simplified the process! Need to remember to do the same for other professors, even those with a B. Noticed that new excel sheet does not seem to have far right columns, such as AC, which is necessary for A+ steps- need to investigate further (1 hour 45 min.).
June 10, 2020— Worked on trying to download James Chickos’ profile from the Discovery system after Trisha noted that it wasn’t downloading. Was unable to get the information, talked with practicum programmer and found the source of the issue. Will work on fixing in the next day (1 hour).
June 11, 2020— Worked on importing new OA Checked file into Anne Winkler’s Excel sheet and asked question about authorship vs. investigator status. Coordinated with practicum programmer and he was able to update the extension to address any issues with doi like that which occurred with James Chickos (1 hour).
June 12, 2020— Reviewed documentation, only one more question about Anne Winkler. Will finish Jeanne Zarucchi during upcoming meeting with Lena today, started work on completing Gaiyan Zhang (2 hours). *coalition building and cross-disciplinary communication* Met with Lena to discuss updating old professor profiles using new method and work plans for furlough week (1 hour 15 min.).
June 14, 2020— Finished Anne Winkler’s profile. Went to download more professors previously listed as b to update with extension’s new file format, but site was down. Emailed site admin to ask about fixing access. Corrected Chung Wong’s OA work to have all relevant info, but should double check again for Licensing using the new method once the Discovery site is working again. Rewatched zoom recording for publisher pdf info (3 hours).
June 15, 2020— Downloaded some profiles from the Discovery site once it was working again, and looked into issues with Chrome extension access and documentation (30 min.).
June 17, 2020— Reworked Gaiyan Zhang profile to reflect most current workflow documentation (1 hour).
June 18, 2020— Asked question about uploading ssrn/postprint works at A stage. Updated documentation for A step (new screenshots to correct columns). Continued work to update old profiles with new extension sheet layouts (1 hour 30 min.).
June 19, 2020— Continued updating old profiles to match layouts. Asked another question about deposit statements (remember to check for responses) (4 hours).

June 24, 2020— Finished bringing up all old profiles to A+! Fixed Gaiyan Zhang SSRN titles. Started new profiles, need to meet with Lena on existing BePress “presentations” that should be articles/chapters (2 hours).
June 26, 2020— Worked on Wiland profile after talking with Lena about presentations. BePress access was on/off, so working in increments around that (2 hours).
June 27, 2020— Continued working on new profiles. Need to ask about importing missing works as downloads? Went back and updated old profiles’ empty publisher statements to include dois (4 hours 30 min.).
June 28, 2020—Check-in meeting with Lena, discussed OpenURL (15 min.). Continued work on professor profiles, asked question about adding authors- need to revise all previous profiles, stopped at Kamila White Discovery Work row #20 (2 hours).

July 1, 2020— Continued looking through old profiles to ensure all authors are credited (completed). Worked on practicum experience statement ( 4 hours 15 min.).
July 3, 2020— Continued working on new profiles. Need to ask Lena about works listed without downloads or links (ex.- Gwendolyn D’Anne Hancock-Weise). *Per meeting with Lena, these are “metadata only” and are fine* (4 hours).

July 10, 2020— Continued working on new profile. Roxanne Vandermause- have one article that can only find through ProQuest and isn’t OA to upload pdf, how to link (or leave as metadata only?) (2 hours).
July 11, 2020— Updated profiles with questions according to Lena’s feedback. Made post about ISBN update to the Chrome extension. Continued working on new profiles (4 hours).

July 13, 2020— Met with Lena, discussed Tse’s question and tallying works on Professor Profiles List (15 min.). Continued working on new profiles. Question- A work that has not been published (ex. Jacqueline Thompson- online interview)- list as metadata/other or leave off of profile? What if this is the only Discovery work? Tallied up works. Read documentation for Step F (2 hours 45 min.).
July 15, 2020— Began working on getting F profiles to AF+. Messaged Lena with questions (1 hour 45 min.). Learned about Zotero, downloaded Zotero and Chrome extension. Continued working on getting F profiles to AF+/F- (2 hours 45 min.).
July 17, 2020— Continued working on getting F profiles to AF+/F-, spoke to Lena about working with blank profiles (4 hours).
July 18, 2020— Continued working on getting F profiles to AF+/F-. Tallied my professors and their works. Worked on blank profiles, listed myself as “reviewer” as they were already marked as F before I worked with them (4 hours).

Summary: I am so grateful to have had the chance to work on this project and to meet and collaborate with Lena. Being able to be a part of this practicum during such a difficult time was an incredible experience, and I am certain that I will use what I learned in my future endeavors. Throughout my degree I learned about open access from a theoretical perspective, so actually exploring what open access means and seeing what goes on behind the scenes at an institutional repository really allowed me to put my education into practice. This was also a great chance for me to get practice with some different types of technology that I know will be useful wherever I go, such as Teams, BePress, and Zotero. I also had the chance to work with a programmer to create our extension, which opened my eyes to the varied collaborative efforts necessary in librarianship. Lastly, this opportunity gave me the best environment to work on my own comfort levels regarding communication, problem-solving, and critical thinking. This practicum has been the perfect ending to my degree, and I am so happy to have been a part of this project.
