Outside Looking In: A Century of Decline

From the second half of the nineteenth to the mid 20th century, Mill Creek Valley had a regular spot in St. Louis news outlets. Outside coverage by white newspapers, such as those seen here from 1886 and 1955, continually created a negative portrait of Mill Creek, and paid little attention to what caused the neighborhood's struggles. However, these newspapers do not illustrate what real life in Mill Creek looked like.
