Culture and the Community: Pine Street YMCA Circus

Subject

The Pine Street YMCA, started by the principal of Colored School No. 10, John Boyer Vashon, provided culture, as well as physical and spiritual wellness, for Mill Creek. In 1934, the YMCA began hosting a circus for the community. This exciting tradition grew in size and splendor, with the 11th iteration maxing the capacity at Kiel Auditorium, modern day Stifel Theater. The Circus united the community, all while supporting its future and well being, as the proceeds from the event went to supporting impoverished African-American Children.
