Title
Carter Carburetor Protest, SHSMO, S0717
Description
After President Roosevelt struck down racial discrimination in hiring for federal defense jobs, the March on Washington Movement didn’t consider their work done. The St. Louis chapter wanted to make sure that local manufacturers were following the letter of the law. In 1942, hundreds of black workers protested outside of the Carter Carburetor Corporation, who had yet to hire a single black man or woman for work on the production line.
