Dublin Core

Description

One of the first theaters operated by and for African Americans, the Booker T. Washington Theater featured movies and musical acts. The theater fostered the growth of many musical traditions within St. Louis including ragtime, jazz and blues not only by giving musicians a place to perform but helping create new ones. Henry Townsend gave direct credit for his decision to become a blues guitarist to watching Lonnie Johnson perform at the theater.
